Documentation of the War addresses the ongoing 4-year conflict since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Photographed in various formats by local Ukrainian photographer, Vladyslav Krasnoshchok from Kharkiv; a city which is less than 30 Km from the front-lines. At first glance the series is disorienting, as one may think they are looking at WWII archive photos. Except for the fact that it has become one of the first drone wars of moderns times. It's the 21st century! The book perfectly melds form with function; content and design; threading the needle between life and death.
Designer’s Statement :
As I am a photographer I went to Ukraine a few times during the war. When it came time to imagine a design for Vlad’s book, I reached back in my memory to my travels in that war-torn country. As I had been under drone attack in the Kharkiv region, I imagined how the war was seen from the perspective of a drone from above over an open grave site, like the one in Izyum. And then there was a synaptic visual leap to the old time player piano-rolls. That became the belly band on the cover. And as Vlad’s title was very dry: I then saw it as a dossier or folder of a report on the war, shown as folder material and color at the beginning and end of the book which sandwiched the book. The photos became that report and evidence, as Documentation of the War - J.E.
